Je me devais de m'entretenir avec DARKTHRONE, l'un des piliers du black metal. Cette interview a été réalisée à l'automne 2006 à l'occasion de la sortie de The Cult is Alive, qui marquait un changement important dans le style de DARKTHRONE. C'est Fenriz qui a répondu à mes questions faisant parfois preuve de mauvaise foi, jouant parfois aussi avec ce qu'on peut attendre de lui et permettant ainsi de situer l'état d'esprit de DARKTHRONE en 2006, un groupe culte malgré sa volonté initiale, mais qui ne pouvait que le devenir !

 

 

1) The cult is alive est maintenant sorti depuis quelques mois, quelles ont été les reactions?

 

Je ne sais pas, je ne lis jamais aucune chronique. Mais Nicke Andersson de DEATH BREATH/ HELLACOPTERS [Ndlr: ex- batteur de ENTOMBED première époque]  l'aime, et c'est assez pour moi. Si un quelconque  vampire "Transylvanian hunger" de chambre boutonneux ne l'aime pas, ce n'est pas MON problème. KICK ASS. (Je m'en tapes?)

 

2) Quelle est la signification du titre The cult is alive? Quel est ce culte? Est-ce une allusion au culte de Darkthrone dans la scène black metal?

 

Je n'ai jamais fait un titre qui signifie juste UNE chose.

Mais les gens qui sont dans le VRAI black metal bien sûr, connaissent POISON (Allemagne) et si tu écoutes attentivement leur demo "Into the abyss" (1986), tu sauras la référence.

 

3) Chaque jour l'incontestable culte de DARKTHONE grandit, comment vois-tu cela? N'est-ce pas paradoxal considérant votre volonté initiale d'être le groupe le plus sale et répulsif?

 

BONNE QUESTION! J'imagine que nous rassemblons toutes les âmes qui veulent quelque chose de VRAI et de SALE, au lieu de quelque chose de plastique et de commercial, que la scène metal a vomi les 10 dernières années.

Je pense que nous avons des influences excitantes, qui nous aident à offrir un produit original. Ma toute dernière chanson est inspirée par HUMBLE PIE et STATUS QUO, mais quand nous enregistrons la chanson, tout le monde y compris nous-mêmes (haha!) sera incapable de l'entendre.

 

4) Comment perçois-tu la mode black metal et la pleine intégration du black metal au metal?

 

Si tu veux dire: quand sera-t-il totalement normal pour un fan d'EDGUY d'écouter aussi BLASPHEMY, non, ça n'arrivera jamais. Chaque style a quelques groupes qui sont juste pour les fans hardcore, mais aussi quelques groupes que "tout le monde" peut écouter. Là repose la difficulté à définir ce qui est underground: est-ce un groupe TRES INCONNU qui joue le style plastique commercial d'un CRADLE OF FILTH, underground parce que le groupe est inconnu? Ou est-ce un groupe comme DARKTHRONE qui a un son de TOTAL demo underground? C'est une situation difficile pour décider. Mais je pense que les groupes cultes sont underground à cause de leur son – production – ils refusent habituellement de se vendre avec un son gros et flashy. Je dirais que SATYRICON est plus vrai que jamais avec leur musique; et qu'ils apportent l'underground aux gens par leur choix d'exposition. DARKTHRONE d'un autre coté, est un groupe beaucoup plus sale, et a d'autres fans – mais c'est souvent parce que les gens s'occupent du packaging et de l'attitude, et échouent à voir que la musique des deux groupes est plutôt similaire.

 

5) Dans le dernier album, il y a un morceau nommé "Shut up" où tu dis "tu copies mon style". Est-ce que cette chanson est dédicacée à tous vos clones?!? Que penses-tu de tous ces groupes qui essaient de faire du DARKTHRONE souvent sans talent ni convictions???

 

Je dis comme Ozzy, "JE NE SAIS PAS"

 

6) Dans le single "Too old too cold", on trouve "Love is a void" qui est une reprise de SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHESS, un groupe de post punk/ cold wave; c'est très étrange pour un groupe comme vous de ne pas reprendre HELLHAMMER, CELTIC FROST, VENOM ou BATHORY?

 

Pourquoi CELTIC FROST eux-mêmes ont repris WALL OF VOODOO sur leur album "Into the pandemonium"?

Je ne reprendrais pas un groupe qui n'a besoin d'aucune introduction, c'est une façon de voir que nous sommes un groupe OMNIPOTENT.

Laissons les imbéciles reprendre l'évident.

Ce serait étrange pour un groupe dinosaure comme DARKTHRONE de faire quelque chose d'évident, parce que comme dit BRUCE SPRIGSTEEN, l'astuce est d'être comme HOUDINI, de t'enfermer dans une boîte et alors de s'en échapper. Depuis nous nous sommes échappés du thrash, death, black.

Mais nous sommes encore black metal.

 

7) Votre musique est désormais plus primitive, plus punk et moins sombre avec le temps, es-tu d'accord?

 

Et bien, juste parce que le battement n'a pas désormais toujours la double basse drums, ça ne signifie pas que c'est plus simple, j'aimerai voir le batteur qui copie mon style MAINTENANT, hehehehe! Beaucoup de détails spontanés, joués TRES DUR.

Mais bien sur, je suis de retour dans DARKTHRONE et je fais 50% des chansons, BIEN SUR que ce sera plus primitif, parce que je suis celui qui fait toujours des riffs dans de simples battements en 4/4, et je fais tous les riffs sur une guitare acoustique donc je sais que ça sonnera kick ass avec fuzz ["so i know it will sound kick ass with fuzz".]

Aussi, avec le son que nous avons dans notre studio maintenant, seulement des trucs primitifs travailleront. C'est comme MISFITS, du vieux AC/DC ou MOTORHEAD – ce son est SANS TEMPS, cru, organique – mais ça n'invite pas du "musique classique –metal", hehehehehehehe.

 

 

8) Avec "The cult is alive", vous êtes retournés sur PEACEVILLE, votre premier  label qui a sorti les 4 premiers albums de DARKTHRONE. Pourquoi être retournés chez eux, comment cela est-il arrivé, pourquoi avez-vous quitté MOONFOG, le label de Satyr?

 

Saoulant. Qui ça intéresse? Je pensais que nous étions tous dans ça pour la musique?

 

9) Pourquoi aviez vous quitté Peaceville après "Transylvanian Hunger"? Etait-ce dû à la polémique avec "Transylvanian Hunger". Qu'était-il vraiment arrivé à l'époque, était-ce de par provocation, conviction ou malentendu?

 

Notre contrat se terminait, et je commençais  à beaucoup traîner avec Satyr

 

10) Aujourd'hui Nocturno Culto dirige une division chez PEACEVILLE, pourrais-tu nous parler de  cette division, de comment cela est-il arrivé, ainsi que quelques mots sur vos groupes?

 

En tout premier, ce n'est pas mon idée, Ted avait l'opportunité de faire ça et il l'a fait. J'ai trouvé un nom pour le label et je suis venu avec les deux premiers groupes à signer, c'est tout ce que j'ai fait. J'ai seulement signé un contrat disant que je ne gagnerais RIEN de SYNDICATE, donc ça prouve que CE N'EST PAS MON BUSINESS

Avec TYRANT SYNDICATE nous avons juste voulu donner la chance à quelques groupes d'avoir de bonnes distributions et d'attirer un peu l'attention, comme le label NECROSIS que les mecs de CARCASS avait sur Earache en 88-90. Nos groupes sont AURA NOIR (thrash avec d'extrêmement bon riffs et voix, et pas du thrash mega saoulant comme THE HAUNTED), OLD ultra-très old school metal – pas comme du black metal de wannabe oldschool 1993), ABSCESS (qui ne devrait avoir besoin d'aucune présentation, c'est du AUTOPSY s'échappant de la cage du death metal avec plus de death grind punk rock crû et dégoûtant) et finalement OBLITERATION (old school death metal)

Les gens essaient toujours d'obtenir un contrat avec nous, mais ils ne comprennent pas que nous aimons trouver les groupes PAR NOUS-MEMES. Désormais nous sommes pleinement complets, donc  pour tous ceux qui essaient c'est sans espoir quoi qu'il en soit.

 

11) Depuis quelques années, DARKTHRONE semble être moins sévères avec ses principes. Premièrement, votre visuel a changé: images sans maquillage, couvertures en couleurs, ainsi que votre attitude envers vos fans: concert au Wacken festival, video clip, boxset… DARKTHRONE est-il toujours le même après toutes ces années? Peut-on parlé d'une évolution dans votre état d'esprit?

 

Nous avions une pochette en 96, "Total death", une en 2002, "Plaguevielder". Donc il ne s'est rien passé, une pochette couleur dans les années 90, une dans les années 2000. Donc je ne comprends pas ce que tu veux dire. Egalement, notre premier album "Soulside journey" était en couleur. Nous n'avons jamais eu ces principes dont tu parles. Hmmm, étrange… [NDLR: Fenriz semble faire preuve de mauvaise foi: j'aurai dû préciser "pochettes purement en noir et blanc"… quand aux principes, les interviews de l'époque "a blaze" semblent les affirmer (cf Metal Hammer spécial Thrash)]

Maquillages?

Je n'ai jamais fait quoique ce soit comme le Wacken pour les fans, je suis encore CHOQUE ET DEGOUTE que ce soit arrivé. Quelle blague. C'est une chance que je n'ai jamais eu à voir ça. Je n'ai jamais obtenu d'argent pour ça.

 

Quand tu parles de video clip, box…C'est le business de la musique qui se fout de la gueule de tout le monde, quand je veux acheter un vieil album, j'ai souvent un CD REMASTERISE avec des CHANSONS LIVE BONUS. Je demande POURQUOI! Les compagnies de disque disent LES FANS VEULENT CA! Je dis PUTAIN JE NE VEUX PAS CA! Donc ça ne reste que mon cas.

En ce qui concerne la video, j'ai seulement dis oui parce que je savais que ça n'allait pas être une putain  de video stupide de cirque, juste de la vrai merde. Peut-être la pire video de toujours est la video de VADER avec des robots d'ordinateurs, mais aussi chaque video où tu peux voir que le PRODUCTEUR a dit "essayer de faire méchant maintenant". Hahahahaha

Faire toutes ces choses pour les fans n'est PAS une évolution dans l'esprit, c'est une EVOLUTION EFFONDREMENT de l'esprit ("doing all these things for the fans is NOT an evolution in mind, it's an EVOLUTION BREAKDOWN of the mind"). Dégoûtant.

Mais je ne sais pas si c'est le business de la musique et la presse qui ont rendu les fans tellement sans cerveau et curieux. Tout ce que je sais c'est que c'est dégoûtant. 

 

12) La récente réédition de "Preparing for war" contient un dvd avec de rares performances de 1991 et 1996.  La première est très ancienne, avant "Under a funeral moon". Vous avez fait un très étrange concert au Wacken festival en 2005 puisque les chansons de DARKTHRONE ont été joués avec les membres de SATYRICON et sans Fenriz?!?. Est-ce qu'actuellement DARKTHRONE a l'intention de faire des concerts?

 

Non.

 

13) Votre tout premier album "Soulside journey" était un bon enregistrement dans le style du dark death suédois et n'était pas un enregistrement de black metal. Comment vois-tu aujourd'hui cet enregistrement et pourquoi avoir à cette époque opté pour le black metal dont vous êtes devenus les leaders? De nos jours, on retrouve des adeptes qui sont dans les 2 scènes à la fois et certains groupes évoluent vers le death meta l(comme Behemoth).

 

Ce n'était pas du death metal suédois, c'est JUSTE A CAUSE DU SON que vous dites tous ça. Nous avions seulement UNE inspiration suédoise et c'était NIHILIST, à part ça nous étions inspirés par MORBID ANGEL, AUTOPSY, NOCTURNUS.

 

L'histoire de comment nous avons arrêté de jouer du death technique et commencer du black primitif peut-être lu PARTOUT [NDLR: ???? Ah bon?!? Alors peut-être dans Hard Rock magazine mais tout le monde ne lis pas ça…], et je l'ai dite des CENTAINES ET DES CENTAINES DE FOIS, donc je ne m'ennuierai plus avec ça.

 

Mais durant l'été 1989, j'ai entendu TORMENTOR de Hongrie au beau milieu de tout le death metal dans l'undergorund, et j'ai eu le feeling black metal! Donc j'ai commencé à écouter les premiers KREATOR, SODOM, DESTRUCTION encore, et aussi BATHORY.

 

Ce feeling a grandi et grandi, et une année plus tard nous avons tous commencé à écouter principalement des trucs avec un feeling black metal. Seulement le problème était que nous jouions encore du death metal alors, l'été de 1990 nous avons enregistré notre premier album SOULSIDE JOURNEY, et ensuite nous avons fait notre second album "Goatlord", mais nous ne l'avions pas enregistré, à la place nous avons commencé à jouer du death metal primitif comme NOUS VOULIONS.

 

14) Chaque groupe de référence  dans chaque style semble chanter à propos de sa musique, MANOWAR chante à propos du heavy metal dans "Kings of metal", ONSLAUGHT a chanté à propos du thrash dans "Thrash till death" et UNLEASHED a chanté à propos du death metal dans "Death metal victory", et vous vous avez quelques textes qui parlent explicitement de la musique black metal et de son mode de vie. Comment expliquer cette attitude?

 

N'est-ce PAS naturel? Peut-être devrons-nous chanter à propos de ce que nous ne FAISONS PAS en effet?

Nouveau lyric: "Je n'écoute pas CRADLE OF FILTH, parce que je suis un putain de black metalleux" 

 

15) DARKTHRONE a vraiment une attitude plus rock n' roll aujourd'hui avec "The cult is alive". Est-ce que le black metal serait finalement du rock n' roll???? Le Rock n' roll semble devenir une nouvelle attitude dans le black metal?

 

Le black metal est les deux. Tu peux choisir: es-tu un black metalleux de cirque ou un sale black metalleux.

On peut faire remonter constamment notre black metal au rock n' roll des années 5.0

 L'autre type de black metal n'a aucune affiliation constante, plutôt que cette origine, Beethoven.

Nous disons "ROLL OVER, BEETHOVEN" 

 

17) Une autre mode dans le black metal est le "true black", un style qui se réclame de DARKTHRONE. D'une certaine manière, ce style tente de recréer quelque chose dans le genre de l' "inner circle". Est-ce que l'esprit primitif du black metal peut être recréé aujourd'hui ou était-ce un état d'esprit localisé dans le temps qui ne pourra pas se retrouver dans la simple répétition? L'esprit black metal, n'est-il pas plutôt un appel à un dépassement vers un nouvel état d'esprit élitiste (comme un groupe tel BLUT AUS NORD?). Le black metal est devenu à la mode, cela est-il un signe ostentatoire que l'esprit black metal est perdu pour toujours? Par conséquent L'Inner Circle a-t-il échoué à protéger l'esprit black metal??? Car aujourd'hui le black metal n'est plus un style de vie, finalement c'est même devenu un produit de consommation comme un autre style de musique??? Aujourd'hui la médiocrité de beaucoup de groupe signifie copier et dépecer. Quelques commentaires à propos du black metal de hier et d'aujourd'hui?

 

Le black metal était seulement "true" quand personne ne parlait de ça.

Maintenant il peut être true d'une manière différente.

Mais je suis sur ma propre lancée, pour rechercher l'histoire de la musique de tout ça, voyant constamment le retour des années 80 aux années 60 si loin, pour voir et saluer les connections de tout ça. Je n'ai jamais demandé à personne de suivre. Penses-tu que quelqu'un aurait posé ta question en 1991? Non.

 Nous n'étions pas assis à penser comme ça, nous agissions, nous étions de TOTALS MONSTRES ET MANIAQUES. Et nous étions seulement 10-15 dans toute la Norvège.

 

Aussi, rien n'est PERDU POUR TOUJOURS. A part la nature. Les idées humaines  et les modes vont toujours en mourrant et en revenant à la vie, en musique souvent par cycles de 20 ans. Le style de 1993 sera peut-être à nouveau à la mode en 2013.

 

18) Que penses-tu du satanisme? Qu'est-ce que ça signifie pour toi? Dans "Transylvanian hunger", tu as écrit: "Darkthrone is for all the evil in man". Cela signifie-t-il que tu encourages à faire le mal ou plutôt que c'est le mal dans le monde qui a créé DARKTHONE comme un capteur d'émotions sombres?

 

Ca concerne OU JE SUIS MAINTENANT

 

19) Le black metal combat souvent le christianisme, mais le christianisme est pratiquement mort, ce n'est pas vraiment un combat finalement. Que penses-tu des nouvelles actions religieuses et par exemple de la polémique avec les caricatures de Mahomet?

 

Si le christianisme était mort, il n' y aurait pas Israel. 

 

20) Darkthrone a toujours joué du black metal basique, mais avec vos side-projets vous avez essayé d'autres styles comme STORM avec du Nordic folk metal ou ISENGARD, mais aussi des projet non metal comme NEPTUNE TOWERS? Pourquoi aujourd'hui tous ces projets sont morts?

 

N'oublies pas VALHALL, DØDHEIMSGARD… J'étais grillé en 1995, comme j'avais fait dix albums en 93-95, et je ne pouvais plus faire de musique, j'étais finalement vide. J'ai décidé de remplir ma tête avec encore plus de musique qu'avant. Les 10 dernières années m'ont apporté environ 400 nouveaux titres par an, et c'est encore plus fou, ma collection de disques est maintenant FOLLE, et je suis toujours inspiré par des choses sauvages et étranges – et j'espère que cela peut garder DARKTHRONE à la fois non compliqué musicalement ET très frais!!

 

 

21) Que penses-tu de la "guerre" interne entre les fans de true black (avec des t-shirts DARKTHONE) et les adeptes de black symphonic (DIMMU BORGIR, CRADLE OF FILTH…)?!? Est-ce que cela a un sens?

 

Si c'était une guerre interne, tu n'en saurais rien et ne me questionnerais pas sur ça, AHAHAHAHAHA! Je pense que c'est le truc dont les rêves sont fait, c'est magique.

 

22) Que penses-tu des vieux groupes qui essayent une autre forme de black metal ou d'autres styles comme EMPEROR, ENSLAVED, SATYRICON,… Est-il possible que DARKTHRONE modifie sa musique dans les années à venir?!?

 

Oh, les 5 derniers albums de ENSLAVED sont ETONNANTS. Probablement le meilleur groupe METAL de Norvège maintenant! SORS EN COURANT ET ACHETES LES!

Chaque fois que nous sortons un album nous avons entendu un chœur au loin disant "TU AS CHANGE!!!! Sans s'occuper de ce que nous faisons. Nous pourrions enregistré l'Exacte même album 2 fois d'affilée, seulement avec une pochette différente et les gens dirait VOUS AVEZ CHANGE!!! C'est un fait.

Nous avons la liberté et tous les autres groupes que tu as mentionné ont la liberté. L'Homme combattra toujours pour la liberté.

 

23) Qu'écoutez-vous aujourd'hui en black metal, metal et autres?

 

Les plus cool groupes que j'ai découvert cette année (metal): SENTINEL BEAST, BLESSED DEATH, CIRITH UNGOL (je ne les aimais pas en 86, leurs deux premiers albums  tuent), HEXENHAUS, HOLOCAUSTO, MORBID SAINT, DORSAL ATLANTICA, EXE, KAT  album 666, APUR (un groupe russe je crois, qui sonne comme IRON MAIDEN, PARABELLUM demos, FLAMES OF HELL, aussi j'ai redécouvert l'album de AXEGRINDER!!!

Tous ceux là sont bien-sûr des années 80, où le metal était nettement meilleur. Et c'était le meilleur du meilleur que j'ai découvert cette année de loin.

Nouveau black metal… j'aime CULT OF DAATH. Et quelques chansons du nouveau CREEP COLONY tuent. Et OLD bien-sûr… mais ces groupes sont juste nouveau, ils ne jouent pas du nouveau black metal. J'aime aussi MIDNIGHT des USA… et SANCTUM… mais ils ne sont pas black metal.

Autre musique, c'est à peu près tout ce que j'écoute. De JENNY WILSON à SILVER APPLES à EMBASSY à BURIAL et REKID.

Cette année j'ai collectionné à peu près 450-500 albums, j'ai été TRES occupé. J'espère que l'année prochaine je pourrais réduire à environ 300.

 

24) Combien de copies avez-vous vendu de chaque album? Pouvez-vous vivre de votre musique?

 

Je n'ai JAMAIS su combien d'exemplaires. La plupart des albums vendent beaucoup de copies chaque année parce que les audiences metal sont d'une ESPECE UNIQUE, pas comme les stupides audiences pop qui surfent toujours sur la mode.

Je ne sais pas si je pourrai vivre de ma musique, je n'ai jamais voulu ça et je ne veux pas essayer. Ca signifie premièrement d'avoir à vendre, et ça signifie aussi que soudainement que ce que tu aimes faire c'est ton JOB.

DARKTHRONE Interview 2006 (English Version)

 

 

1) "The cult is alive" is now out since several months, what have been the reactions?

 

I don't know, I never read any reviews. But Nicke Andersson from DEATH BREATH/HELLACOPTERS likes it, and that's enough for me. If some bedroom vampire transilvanian hunger-nerd does not like it, it's not MY problem. KICK ASS

 

2) What is the meaning in the title "the cult is alive"? What is this cult? Is it a reference to the cult to Darkthrone in the black metal scene?

 

I never make a title that just means ONE thing.

 

But people that are into REAL black metal of course worship POISON (Germany), and if you listen closely to their "into the abyss" demo (1986), you will know the reference.

 

3) Everyday the incontestable cult of Darkthrone becomes greater, how do you see it? Isn't it a paradox regarding your primitive wish to be the ugliest and the more repulsive band?

 

GOOD QUESTION! I guess we collect all the souls who want something REAL and UGLY, instead of something plastic and commercial, that the metal scene has been spewing out the last ten years.

 

I think we have exciting influences, that help us have an original product to offer. my latest song is inspired by HUMBLE PIE and STATUS QUO, but when we record the song, everyone including ourselves (haha!) will be unable to hear it.

 

4) How do you see the black metal fashion and the full integration of black metal in metal?

 

If you mean: when will it be totally normal for an Edguy fan to also listen to BLASPHEMY, no, it will never happen. Every style has some bands that are just for the hardcore fans, but also some bands that "everyone" can listen to. Here lies the difficulty in defining what is underground: is a VERY UNKNOWN band that plays the commercial plastic style of cradle of filth underground because the band is unknown? or is it a band like Darkthrone who has TOTAL underground demo sound? it is a difficult situation to decide. but i think that cult bands are underground because of their sound, production - they usually refuse to sell out with a big and flashy sound. i say that Satyricon is truer than ever with their music, and they bring the underground to the people by their choices of exposion. Darkthrone, on the other hand, is a much dirtier band, and has other fans - but it is often because people care about packaging and attitude, and fail to see that the music of the two bands is 'rather similar¨.

 

5) In the last album, there's a song named "Shut up" where you say: "you copy my style". Is this song dedicated to all your clones?!? What do you think about all these bands trying to make Darkthrone music, often without talent or convictions???

 

I say like Ozzy, "I DON'T KNOW!!!"

 

6) On the single "Too old too cold", we can find "Love is a void" which is a cover from the post-punk / cold wave band Siouxsie and the Banshees; it's very strange for a band like you not to cover Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Venom or Bathory?

 

Why did Celtic Frost themselves cover WALL OF VOODOO on their "Into the pandemonium" Lp?

 

I will not cover a band that needs no introduction, it is a way to see that we are an OMNIPOTENT band.

 

Let the fools cover the obvious.

 

It would be strange for a dinosaur band like Darkthrone to do something obvious, because as Bruce Sprigsteen say, the trick is to be like Houdini, lock yourself into a box and then break out of it. so far we have 'escaped' from thrash, death and black.

 

But we still are black metal.

 

 

7) Your music is now more primitive, more punk and less dark with the time, Do you agree?

 

Well, just because the drumming hasn't always got double bass drums now, it doesn't mean it is simpler, I would like to see the drummer who copies my style NOW, hehehehe! Lot's of spontaneous details, played VERY HARD.

 

But of course, I am back in Darkthrone and i make 50 percent of the songs, OF COURSE it will be more primitive, because I am the one that always makes riffs in simple 4\4 beats, and I make all riffs on a acoustic guitar so I know it will sound kick ass with fuzz.

 

Also, with the sound we have in our studio now, only primitive stuff will work. it's like misfits, old ac dc or Motorhead - this sound is TIMELESS, raw, organic - but it doesn't invite 'classical music-metal', hehehehehehehe

 

 

8) With "The cult is alive", you are returned on your first label "Peaceville", the label for the first four Darkthrone albums. Why have you returned on it, how has happened and why have you left the Moonfog (the label of Satyr)?

 

Boring. Who cares? I thought we were all in it for the music?

 

9) Why have you left Peaceville after "Transylvanian hunger"? Was it in relation with the polemic with "Transylvanian hunger". What was really happened in those times, was it provocation, conviction or only misunderstanding?!?

 

Our contract ran out, and I started to hang around with Satyr a lot.

 

10) Today Nocturno Culto runs a division of Peaceville, can you talk about the beginning of this division, how has happened, and some words about your bands?

 

First of all it wasn't my idea, Ted had the opportunity to do it and he did. i made a name for the label and came up with the 2 first bands to sign, that's all i did. i only signed a contract saying i earn NOTHING from syndicate, so to prove IT IS NOT MY BUSINESS.

 

With Tyrant Syndicate we just wanted to give some bands a chance to have great distributions and to get some attention, like the NECROSIS label the Carcass guys had on Earache back in 88-90. our bands are AURA NOIR (extremely great thrash riffs and vocals, and not mega boring thrash like the haunted), OLD (ultra-true very old school metal - not like wannabee oldschool 1993 bedroom BM), ABSCESS (shouldn't need an introduction, it is AUTOPSY breaking out of the death metal cage with more raw and disgusting death grind punkrock) and finally OBLITERATION (old school death metal).

 

People try always to get a deal with us, but they don't understand we liked to find the bands OURSELVES. now we are fully booked, so anyone who tries are hopeless anyway.

 

11) Since several years, Darkthrone seems to be less severe about its principles. Firstly, your visual has changed: pictures without paintings, covers in colour, and also your attitude into your fans: concert at the Wacken festival, video clip, box, etc. Is Darkthrone still the same after all these years? Can we talk about an evolution in your state of mind?

 

We had one colour cover in 96, TOTAL DEATH. One in 2002, PLAGUEWIELDER. So nothing has happened, 1 colour cover in the 90's, one in the 00's. So I don't understand what you mean. Also, our first album SOULSIDE JOURNEY was colours. We never had these principles you talk about. Hmmm, strange...

 

Paintings?

 

I never did anything like Wacken for the fans, i am STILL SHOCKED AND DISGUSTED that this happened. What a joke. Luckily I never had to see it. I didn't get any money from it.

 

When you talk of video clip, box...this is the music business that fucks with everyones heads, when I want to buy an old album, I usually get a cd REMASTERED with EXTRA LIVE SONGS. I ask WHY! The record companies say THE FANS WANT IT! I say I DON'F FUCKIN WANT IT! So I rest my case.

 

When it comes to video, I only said yes because I knew it wasn't going to be a fucking circus stupid video, just some true shit. Maybe the worst video ever is the Vader video with some computer robots, but also every video where you can see that the PRODUCER has said "try to look evil now". Hahahhaha

 

Doing all these things for the fans is NOT an evolution in mind, it's an EVOLUTION BREAKDOWN of the mind. Disgusting.

 

But I do not know it it's the music business and press that have made the fans so braindead and curious. All I know is that it's disgusting.

 

 

12) The reedition of "Preparing for War" contains a dvd with rare performances from 1991 and 1996. The first one is very old, before "Under a Funeral Moon". You have played a very strange concert at the Wacken festival in 2005 because Darkthrone songs have been performed with Satyricon members and without Fenriz?!? Does Darkthrone wish to play some concerts today?

13) Your very first album "Soulside journey" was a good release in the swedish dark death metal way and was not a black metal release. How do you see nowadays this release and why in those days are you moved into black metal style whom you are become the leader? Today the kids are sometimes in the two scenes and some bands evolute into death metal (like Behemoth)?

 

It wasn't Swedish death metal, it is JUST BECAUSE OF THE SOUND that you all say that. we only had ONE Swedish inspiration, and that was NIHILIST, apart from that we were inspired by MORBID ANGEL, AUTOPSY, NOCTURNUS

 

The story of how we stopped playing technical death and started primitive black can be read EVERYWHERE, and I have told it HUNDREDS OF HUNDREDS OF TIMES, so i won't bother anymore.

 

But in summer 1989 I heard Tormentor from Hungary in the midst of all the death metal in the underground, and I got the black metal feeling! So I started to listen to early Kreator, Sodom, destruction again, and also Bathory.

 

This feeling grew and grew, and one year later we had all began to mostly listen to stuff with a black metal feel to it. Only problem was we still played death metal then, summer of 1990 we recorded our first SOULSIDE JOURNEY album, and after that we made our second album GOATLORD, but we didn't record it, instead we started playing primitive death metal like WE WANTED TO.

 

14) Every band in every style seems to sing about its music, Manowar sings about heavy metal in "Kings of metal", Onslaught has sung about thrash in "Thrash till death" and Unleashed has sung about death metal in "Death metal victory", and you have some lyrics about black metal music and way of life. How explains this attitude?

 

Is that UN-natural? Maybe we should sing about what we DO NOT do instead?

15) Darkthrone has a really more rock n' roll attitude today with "the cult is alive". Is black metal finally rock n' roll??? Rock n' roll seems to become a new attitude in black metal today?

 

Black metal is both. You can choose: are you a circus black metaller or a dirty black metaller.

 

Our black metal can be traced constantly back to the 50's rock n'roll.

 

The other type of black metal has no constant tracing, other than that of back, Beethoven.

 

We say ROLL OVER, BEETHOVEN

 

 

16) In fact, Rock n' roll and totalitarian way seems to be the two alternatives ways today, so there are a lot of bands playing with right wing thematics or totalitarian folklore. For you, is it closed to primitive black metal spirit? For example, Graveland has moved from true black metal to pagan black metal and has opened the way when have released a split with the RAC band HONOR.

17) Another fashion in black metal is the "true black" style which claims itself from Darkthrone? In a way, this style tries to recreate something like "inner circle". Can primitive black metal spirit be recreated today or was it a state of mind located in time which can't be found again in repetition? Is black metal spirit rather a call to an overtaking into a new elitist state of mind (like a band like Blut Aus Nord)? Black metal movement is became a fashion, so is it an ostentatious sign that original black metal spirit is lost forever? So is Inner Circle has failed to protect black metal spirit??? Because today black metal isn't a way of life anymore, finally it's became a product to be consumed like another style of music??? Today the mediocrity of lot of bands means copy and cut up. So some comments about black metal today and yesterday?

 

Black metal was only 'true' when no one talked about it.

 

Now it can be true in a DIFFERENT WAY.

 

But I am on my own trail, to search for the music history of it all, constantly viewing the 80's back to the 60's so far, to see and hail the connections of it all. I never asked anyone to follow. Do you think anyone asked your question back in 1991? No.

 

We didn't sit around thinking like that, we acted, we were TOTAL FREAKS AND MANIACS. And we were only 10-15 in the whole of Norway.

 

Also, nothing is LOST FOREVER, other than nature. Human thoughts and trends are always dying and giving birth, in music usually in 20 year cycles. The 93 style will maybe be trendy again in 2013.

 

 

18) What do you think about Satanism? What does it mean for you? On "Transylvanian hunger" you wrote: "Darkthrone is for all the evil in man". Does it mean you support to make evil or it's more that evil in world has created Darkthrone as a captor of dark emotions?

19) Black metal bands fight usually Christianity, but Christianity is nearly dead, it's not really a fight finally. So what do you think about new religious actions and for example the polemic with drawings of Mahomet?

 

If Christianity was dead, there would be no Israel

 

 

20) Darkthrone has always play basic black metal, but with your side projects you are moved into other style like STORM with Nordic folk metal or ISENGARD, but also non metal music project like NEPTUNE TOWERS? Why today all this projects are dead?

 

Don't forget VALHALL, DØDHEIMSGARD… I got burned out in 1995, as I had made 10 albums in 93-95, and I couldn't make anymore music, I was finally empty. I decided to fill my head with even more music than before. The last 10 years has brought me around 400 new titles a year, and it just gets crazier, my record collection is now INSANE, and I always get inspired by wild and strange things - and I hope this can keep Darkthrone both uncomplicated musically AND very fresh!!

 

21) What do you think about the internal "war" between true black fans (with Darkthrone t-shirts) and symphonic black metal addicts (Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth,…)?!? Does it make a sense?!?

 

If it was an internal war, you wouldn't know about it and ask me about it, AHAHAHAHAHA! I think it's the stuff that dreams are made of, it's magic.

 

22) What do you think about old bands which try another shape of black metal or other styles like EMPEROR, ENSLAVED, SATYRICON,…Can Darkthrone change its music in the years to come?!?

 

Oh, the last 5 albums of ENSLAVED are AMAZING. Probably best METAL band from Norway now! RUN OUT AND BUY THEM!

Every time we release an album we have heard a distant choir saying YOU¨VE CHANGED!!!! No matter what we do. We could release the EXACT same album 2 times in a row, only with a different cover and people would say YOU'VE CHANGED!!! it is a fact.

 

We have freedom, and all the other bands you mentioned has freedom. Man will always fight for freedom.

 

23) What do you listen to today, in black metal, metal and other styles?

All these are of course from the 80s, where metal was clearly best. and this was the best of the best i discovered this year so far.

New black metal...i like CULT OF DAATH. and some of the songs on the new CREEP COLONY rules. and OLD ofcourse...but these bands are just new, they don't play new black metal. i also like MIDNIGHT from the states..and SANCTUM..but they aren't bm.

Other music, it's pretty much everything that i listen to. from jenny wilson to silver apples to embassy to burial and rekid

This year i collected around 450-500 albums, it's been VERY busy. i hope next year i can cut back to only 300 ca.

 

24) How many copy of each albums have you sold? Can you live from your music?

I have NEVER known how many copies. most of the albums sell many copies every year, because metal audiences are ONE OF A KIND in this world, not like the stupid pop audiences who always surf a trend.

I don't know if i could live by my music, i never wanted that and i don't want to try. that means one has to sell out, and it also means that suddenly what you love to do is your JOB.
